Linux vs Windows:Which Operating System You Choose?

(Last Updated On: November 20, 2017)

Now there is a doubt in everybody mind about using Operating System. Linux or Windows?

Am i right?

In this article I will be going to explain both the OS versions in brief and also suggest you which one you should use.

Although in an earlier post of mine I have already explained advantages of using Linux if you missed that please check it once.

Now I also feel in conjunction with that it is very helpful for my readers to make a comparative post of Linux and Windows.

Windows OS is no doubt is the most popular Desktop operating system in terms of usage.

There are many people there is if you do not use Windows the only other option remains is the Macintosh.

Now Mac is very costly option in terms of general usage and for common user.

So here is a brief comparison:

Distros:Linux V/s Windows

Now though Linux is on open source OS since from its origin, there are basically many versions of Linux distros available in the market.

So often common users get confused which one to really choose?

Here is very handy online tool in which you can just pick your preferences and this handy Linux Distro Picker can suggest you the best version to choose from.

Not many people know this.

So keep it a note.

But in case of Windows you have standard versions like Windows 7,Windows 8,Windows 10 which you can get from very reliable source and very easy to pick.

You can also get updates and security features from Microsoft.

But in case of Linux simply it is not the case.

You have to go for the specific distros official website or browse community forums to get updates if you have any problems or in case of bugs found.

So keeping up with this pace not always possible for all.

Installation Process:Linux v/s Windows:

When it comes to installation specially these Linux distros come up with try first approach.

Many of these Linux versions come up with bootable form like DVSs or flash drive which give you the option to taste the version before actually install it in your PC.

Sometimes this is just too much for a normal user to digest. Compared to Windows you can make a quick install just from the DVD provided with much easy to use interface and instructions.

Though now-a-days you can also install windows from bootable versions like pendrive or flash drives without actually installing it.

So Windows is also scoring here.

Windows v/s Linux software:

Software availability and compatibility  is one of the biggest advantages of using windows.

If you are using Linux and if you want to install some linux software then you have to depend on appropriate packages. Installing software involve by typing an apt-get command from the command line.

So you have to know the proper technical know how to get this done basically.

In case of windows you just need the (.exe)  Executable file which can be found from the particular vendor website and then simply right click and install it.

That’s it.

Linux has no such facilities.

This is one point which I think Linux scores highly this is the usage capacity.

Linux can be installed a variety of hardware not only limiting to PCs and Laptops.

It can be installed in mobile phones, tablets, video games, consoles and also in Mainframes and Supercomputers.

You can be amazed to know the biggest and the most powerful Supercomputers are running Linux these days.

File system support:

Linux uses file system like Ext2, Ext3, FAT, FAT32, NTFS,Ext4, Jfs, ReiserFS, Xfs, Btrfs.

Windows uses FAT, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT.

Languages used to develop:

Windows is purely written in  C++, kernel is in C.

In case Linux mostly things are in C, many apps are in Python, KDE is all C++.

All kernels use some assembly code.

Impeccable Security:

Now the last and the most point.

Since Windows is the mostly used PC OS, hackers are always trying to find new ways to find loopholes to infect your PC.

Additionally there are thousands if not millions of spywares, malicious scripts just written every day to infect your system.

For example ,you may aware that a global hacking named Wanna Cry ransomware attack had only targeted Microsoft Windows operating system earlier May 2017 this year. This was a very big threat and thousands of windows systems were compromised.

But I cannot remember this type of issues with Linux.

So incase of security Linux scores top notch here.

Last word:

So to summarize all if you are a power user, need top security and learn something new Linux is for you!

In the other hand if you like the stunning visuals, want to enjoy music with your morning cup of tea, Windows is the OS to go for.

That’s all for now friends.

What is your choice?
